Cheap, common kitty litter clay captures methane from the air

"...Carbon dioxide may hog the headlines as a climate change villain, but methane is actually a far more potent greenhouse gas. An MIT team has now demonstrated a new way to remove methane from the air, even at very low concentrations, with a common type of clay used to make cat litter. Methane is emitted in large quantities from agriculture, coal mining, melting permafrost, and as a by-product of natural gas processing and transport..."

Ottawa expected to release details of carbon capture tax credit soon, Cenovus says Globalnews.ca

"...Proponents say vastly scaling up CCUS across the oil and gas industry will be necessary if Canada is to have a shot at meeting its climate targets. However, some environmentalists are critical of the technology that does nothing to curb overall production of fossil fuel products. In its five-year plan released Wednesday, Cenovus includes smaller, near-term CCUS projects in the works at its Lloydminster Upgrader, Minnedosa Ethanol Plant, and Elmworth gas plant..."

World first methanol towboat to launch in 2023

"...Hydrogen One will be IMO 2030 compliant and meet all requirements of the US Coast Guard’s Subchapter M regulations. The ship has been designed by Elliott Bay Design Group using proven, efficient technology throughout, from ABB’s electrical power distribution and automation to e1 Marine’s methanol-to-hydrogen fuel cell, and it will be able to perform at standard operational speeds for up to 550 miles before needing to refuel..."

RAF makes world's first flight using pure synthetic fuel

"...The Royal Air Force has set a new record by completing the first ever aircraft flight powered entirely by synthetic fuel. On November 2 in the skies over Cotswold Airport in the UK, Group Captain Peter Hackett piloted an Ikarus C42 microlight aircraft fueled by a synthetic UL91 fuel made by British energy company Zero Petroleum from water and carbon dioxide. Synthetic fuels from basic carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen are not new, nor is their use in aircraft, but the normal practice is to produce a blend of synthetic and fossil fuels with under 50 percent synthetics..."

Geely takes on Tesla Semi with futuristic Homtruck electric hauler

"...The steering wheel has its own touchscreen central display that shows vehicle information, and is used to engage autonomous driving modes – the L4 autonomous system makes use of LiDAR, radars and cameras dotted around the vehicle. And there looks to be a wireless charging nook for mobile gadgets. Farizon Auto has even included an outdoor kitchen block that's accessed via a lift-up panel to the side of the truck – with a sink and induction hob, plus space for utensils, plates and bowls – and a small washing machine around the other side to keep company clothing fresh..."

Rooftop system converts CO2, water and sunlight into kerosene

"...Engineers at ETH Zurich have demonstrated a pilot system that can produce fuels from sunlight and air. The device captures carbon dioxide and water from the atmosphere and uses solar energy to convert it into syngas, which is then converted into liquid fuel that’s essentially carbon neutral. With a clearer understanding of the damage caused by human carbon dioxide emissions, there’s plenty of work being done to transition towards electric vehicles, hydrogen power, fuel cells and other sustainable forms of energy..."

US Air Force looks to make jet fuel from atmospheric carbon dioxide

"...The US Air Force is studying the feasibility of a process developed by tech company Twelve that could allow the manufacture of a carbon-neutral aviation fuel called E-Jet anywhere on Earth using only carbon dioxide from the air, water, and renewable energy. Any air force that has evolved beyond gliders is tethered to the supply lines that transport and store the fuel needed to keep its machines in the air. This is not only expensive and complicated when it comes to refueling distant bases, it's also dangerous because such supply lines are prime targets for enemy forces..."

Coca Cola launches a bottle made from 100% plant-based plastic

"...We are seeing some promising advances in the world of plant-based plastics, and not just from research groups at the cutting edge of materials science, but from traditional purveyors of petroleum-based plastics like Lego and Pepsi. Coca Cola's latest moves in the area bring its first ever bottle made from 100 percent plant-based plastic to the table, produced with technology it says is ready to be scaled up. The newly unveiled plant-based bottle arrives more than a decade after the company first introduced its so-called PlantBottle, consisting of recyclable PET plastic made from up to 30 percent plant-based material..."

BLOG: Policymakers will ban fossil fuels at our peril

"...According to reports, the Quebec government may ban all oil and natural gas development in the province. Meanwhile, the Trudeau government has been busy promoting what it calls a “Just Transition” future where fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum and natural gas are deemed fundamentally incompatible with sustainable development. The future, we are told, lies in the development of wind and solar power, and biomass fuels such as corn-based ethanol and wood pellets..."
